My Voiceover Path So far

My thoughts for voice acting began with consumption. I fell into featured films, animation, and books creatively and fully. I could see and feel everything the writers wanted me to feel.
I didn’t have the realization of a a career in voice acting until 2010 where Rick Spencer at Universal Studios Orlando, looked directly at me and said “We need more people like you.” I had to be punched in the face to see that I could make it a career. But alas, there was another problem, I didn’t have time working 3 jobs trying to make ends meet as a performer for both Universal Orlando, Improving for seasonal events, and serving at BB Kings Blues Club.
Then a worldwide pandemic hit in early 2020. I remember getting the news of Disney Worlds closing day until an unforeseen future date. I remember waiting in the longest line in the tunnel to get the Magic Kingdom bus back to the employee parking lot. That line was very long!
I started taking a Live Entertainment Stage and Design course at Valencia College where I took a beginner Audio Engineering class. This is where I realized I had the potential and opportunity to get behind a mic without a full audience watching. Yes there is a lot of technical information to learn, but it was possible!
I was called back to work with many pandemic parameters in place. This stifled my creative soul since shows were very limited. This is when my husband saw my frustration and decided maybe it was time to move. Things were being built up in our area and changing quickly. Driving to and from work was taking longer and longer. So we moved to Virginia!
This is where I started seeing classes being taught by people like Such A Voice, which I paid for an informational session of why I should learn through them… then I saw the price tag!! I yeeted out of that and started looking for more. I understand Such A Voice has changed and has a different approach, but back then it left a not great taste in my mouth. I then saw Anthony Pica’s VO Journey Academy was 50% off for the first month. I learned so much in 3 months but without income coming in, it wasn’t possible to stay. Anthony and his team really helped me understand the basics and the business of voice acting.
I started working for a retail store and no longer had time and had to focus on paying down debt. I still was seeking where I could learn and wanted to find a lower cost education platform. I started coaching with Jenn Henry who let me know about Gravy For The Brain. I loved their courses and how you could learn on your own while still attending Live Webinars. I’m still a member today!
I also saw that there was another course called Joe Zieja’s Acting Academy which is now called Learn Voice Acting. I appreciate it’s short form content and little bits of information in each video. It was easy to digest and a great way to get introducted into various forms of voice acting. But let’s face it, I am a theater person, and I wanted those truly meaty characters that were fully fleshed out. Welp, none of these were as in-depth as I wanted. So if you’re like me, what I suggest is finding those 1-on-1 coaching sessions and really going into copy. It keeps you fresh and keeps that creative juice flowing.
If you have any questions, please reach out! I do plan to make a podcast and website recommendations in the future, but first I need to get my ducks in a row. Till next time!
